Learn English
The English Language for all levels at Multi-Language Cafe ( www.multilanguagecafe.com )
* Course description:
The first class will be introductory and specific to each student's needs. First classes cover the nature of language and it's functions, and verbal/nonverbal communication. We progress towards sentence structure, past/present/future tenses, punctuation, pitch/accent/pause, and parts of speech.
* Teaching approach:
Once I know the student's level of understanding and comfort, I will work specifically towards their personal goals! We can work together to identify areas that require attention and go from there. I am interested in teaching in effective ways that suit the student, whether strictly verbal, or written (take home tests and exercises). I have lots of little exercises and quizzes that encourage learning. Spelling and grammar are two of my greatest strengths as a teacher!
* Course program:
The course begins with an introduction to the English language: The nature of language, language in social settings, the functions of language, nonverbal communication, and how to listen (listening barriers and strategies). Next, I work through how to execute clear expression, formal, informal, and nonstandard english, and verb tenses. We progress to parts of speech - nouns/pronouns/adjectives/verbs/adverbs etc., and perfect sentence structure (writing AND speaking). Near the end of the course we will consistently work in Standard English. We will work on paragraph and essay writing, and quality of speech. These are essential skills for acquiring a job! If the student wishes, I will give out exercises to take home, such as spelling, tenses, punctuation, and parts of speech quizzes. We will work through them together next class.
* About the teacher:
My name is Olivia, I am 24 and I am a singer, dancer, fitness instructor, English & Drama major, and I love to cook. I am Canadian, born and raised, and I know the English language unequivocally. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are strengths, as well as communication and understanding. Teaching people is gratifying for me because I enjoy working with others to achieve goals.
